Plot

Ramachandramoorthy or Ram.C.M alias Ram (Kamal Haasan) is a pilot based in Canada and an irredeemable skirt-chaser. In course of a midair hijack situation, he meets Mythili (Simran). Mythiil and Ram thwart the hijack and save the plane.
They fall in love and get married. After marriage Ram quits his playboy character and remain faithful to his wife. Ram's four closest buddies Ayyappan Nair (Jayaram), Vedantham (Vedham) Iyer (Yugi Sethu), Ganesh Hegde (Ramesh Aravind) and Hanumanth Reddy (Sriman) are present at the wedding — minus their wives. One day, when Ram helps Nirmala (Devayani) (Ganesh Hegde's ex-lover who tries to suicide since Ganesh Hegde marries his relative due to parents' complusion) from abstaining her from suicide, Mythili misinterprets and presumes that he is two-timing her, and flies off to India to her parents' home. And Ram goes chasing after. Further misunderstanding occurs when he goes to meet Mythilli, drunk and in the middle of the night goes to another house downstairs of Mythili's house.
To take his mind off Mythili for a while, his four friends drive him down to Bangalore and fix him up in a room, complete with call girl Maragadavalli alias Maggi (Ramya Krishnan). Ram won't have any of it. He gets into a fight with Maggi, then dashes over to his friends' room. To salvage the situation, Iyer hurries off to Ram's room and finds Maggi dead. Panicking, Nair, Iyer, Hegde and Reddy decide to get rid of the body in spite of Ram’s pleas to call the police. They manage to roll the dead body in a blanket and carry it over to their car. A mysterious ‘Sardar’ (Ramesh Khanna) watches over this. The friends dispose of the body in a dry river and drive over to Chennai to lead their normal lives.
Ram discovers a cache of diamonds inside the dead girl's cell phone and spoils the plans of the Sardar to steal them. Meanwhile, Mythili is goaded by her parents to give Ram one more chance and she arrives at Ram’s house. In the tussle with the Sardar, Ram removes the Sardars hat and mythili mistakes the Sardars long hair for a girl and leaves Ram once again. The Sardar manages to escape.
The friends get very nervous when they learn of a news article regarding the discovery of a dead body in the same area that they disposed off their dead body. A traditional festival (Ugadhi) has the wives of the four friends plan a party. While planning, Mythili overhears a conversation among them regarding their husband’s friends Ram’s fight with a Sardar and how his wife thought that it was a girl he was having an affair with. Mythili reveals her identity to the wives and gets invited to the party to be rejoined with Ram.
As everyone is present in the party, a twist comes when the supposedly 'dead Maggi' lands up, demanding her diamonds back. She then reveals the truth. The diamonds belongs to her diamond smuggling boss (Manivannan) and she had stolen it from him. She saw an opportunity to make everyone believe she is dead when Ram’s friend mistakes ketchup to be blood and thinks that she was dead. The dead body belonged is of her boss's girlfriend that she killed and managed to get into the blanket when the friends weren’t looking.
Ram with help from his friends, and the Sardar, who happens to be an undercover police officer trying to find the diamonds, saves everyone from Maggi and her boss. Mythilli, promises to change her over suspicious ways and both get back together. The movie ends with Ram asking if he could get the same attention his son is getting.

Originally Krishnamachari Srikkanth was supposed to essay the role later played by Yuhi Sethu, but dropped out. Sethu signed on revealing that Kamal Haasan had approached him to be a part of his two previous films, Thenali and Pammal K. Sambandam too, which he did not take up.[3] Sriman was signed after appearing alongside Kamal Haasan inPammal K. Sambandam, with which the latter was impressed.
The film started shoot in February 2002 and shot in Canada for seventeen days.[4] In April 2002, Kamal Haasan was prevented from boarding a Los Angeles-bound flight in Torontoduring the making of the film, with the security preventing him from passing due to his Islamic-sounding surname.[5] The period of shoot also coincided with the death of Simran's cousin Monal, with Simran choosing to remain on sets in Canada rather than fly back to be with her family.[6] In June 2002, the five friends in the film along with Deva took part in a promotional tour to publicise the soundtrack in Bangalore.[7] The film faced trouble during censorship and parts of a song featuring Ramya Krishnan were subsequently cut, giving the film a U/A (Parental Guidance) rating.[8] Hence the film was delayed for two weeks after an original planned release date of June 14, 2002.[9]

Release

The film opened to positive reviews from critics, with the critic from The Hindu citing that Crazy Mohan's dialogue was "the mainstay", describing the film as "completely entertaining". The reviewer also praised the film's performances claiming that "with suitable slapstick, apt body language and timing and modulation that tickle, the veteran (Kamal Haasan) makes a mark yet again."[10] Similarly, another critic claimed that "Crazy Mohan steals the scenes most of the time with his rib-tickling comedies, one-liners, and sensible timings", giving the film a positive review.[11] Furthermore, reviewers from The Screen dubbed the film as a "clean comic-entertainer", adding that "director KS Ravikumar deserves a pat for weaving out a good screenplay based on Kamal Haasan’s story idea and creating a laugh riot".[12][13]
The film was met with an positive response at the box office, making profits for the producers.[14] Kamal Haasan had distributed the film in the Karnataka region.[8] A sequel to the film was planned and Ravikumar had hoped to film scenes on a cruise liner, but the project failed to take off.[15]

Plot

Manohar, an upper-middle class Indian, moves into a new apartment - 13B on the 13th floor - with his family, fulfilling one of his life's biggest dreams. But the family is greeted by a series of small trivial incidents such as milk getting spoiled that could be regarded as inauspicious but are shrugged off by the excited Manohar. The lift in the apartment does not operate for Manohar.
The women in the family get hooked on to a new TV show Yavarum Nalam (Everyone Is Well, or Sab Khairiyat in the Hindi version). The show is about a family eerily similar to theirs who have also just moved into a new house just like they have. As the serial unfolds, Manohar notices that the incidents that happen in the serial are a reflection of what has happened to Manohar and his family. The serial mirrors Manohar's family life. For example, his sister graduating first-class, his wife getting pregnant and later suffering amiscarriage. The rest of the family remains oblivious to the similarities and Manohar prefers it that way to avoid panic. He also notices that his camera will take twisted pictures of him while he is in the apartment, but not while he is out of the apartment.
As Manohar fights the uneasy feeling in his mind, things start taking a turn for the worse in the serial. He is now terrified that the same might happen to his family as well. Manohar now wants to know who is behind the making of this serial and what their intentions are. As Manohar explores the mysterious happenings, he unravels a deep and unholy secret.
The house they live in was the house where a whole family of eight were murdered way back in 1977. It was the family of a TV news reader named Chitra. On the day of Chitra's engagement an ardent fan (Shriram Shinde in the 13B version) of Chitra wanted to stop the engagement and he failed in doing so. Disheartened, he committed suicide. Subsequently, all members of that family were murdered with a hammer in a single day. The blame rested on the crazy brother in the family, as he had been seen with the hammer last. The police officer investigating the case also committed suicide by hanging himself in the same house.
Now Manohar and his friend, Shiva (Murli Sharma), who is a policeman, are in the process of unraveling the mystery. Manohar researches the madman Senthil/Ashok, who apparently goes crazy after seeing the TV show in an asylum. Manohar then meets Senthil, who extends a hand for Manohar but drags him inside, but his friend Shiva keeps him from being dragged. They then met Chitra's former fiance Ramchandar, who tries to plead for Senthil's innocence because he got covered in blood while he hugged the bodies, failed in the case.
After researching one night, Manohar has a nightmare of the 13B murderer climbing the stairs to kill his family. When Manohar tries to climb the stairs, he always ends up on the 2nd floor and after a few moments he wakes up. He then goes to the hall and witnesses the climax of Yavarum Nalam/Sab Kheriyat when they are showing the murderer's identity; he sees two hammers, one pointed hammer and a blunt sledge-hammer, then showing Manohar's face as the killer.
What follows is the climax that ties up all the loose ends. The 13B murderer is Dr Balu/Dr Shinde, who sees the family members' faces as serial family members. Manohar kills him.
The story ends with Manohar living a normal life with a new dog in the family; the milk is not getting spoiled anymore. They bring Senthil/Ashok home and the lift in the apartment finally works for Manohar. Manohar receives a call from Dr Balu/Dr Shinde while in the lift, who says that while the 13B family haunts the TV, he haunts Manohar's phone.

Unnale Unnale

Unnale Unnale

Unnale Unnale (Tamilஉன்னாலே உன்னாலே, English: Because of You) is a 2007 Tamil musical romance film. Directed and co-written by Jeeva and produced by Oscar Ravichandran its stars Vinay RaiSadha and Tanisha Mukherjee in the lead roles. Raju Sundaram and Lekha Washington, prominent actors from the south Indian film industry, played the roles of the lead character's friends in the film.
The film revolves around the aftermath of a relationship between a careless man and a serious woman. Despite being in a relationship, the latter walks out on the former due to his antics with other women. However, the man changes his ways and on a business trip toMelbourne, he encounters another woman. This other woman's personal assistant turns out to be the man's former lover. The events that follow and who the man eventually gets together with form the crux of the story.
The film opened to Indian audiences after several delays, on 14 April 2007, coinciding with the Tamil New Year. Despite receiving mixed reviews on the actors' performances, the film went on to win the box office battle on Tamil New Year's Day and become a major hit at the South Indian box office.[3] Owing to its success, it was later dubbed into the Telugu language as Neevalle Neevalle.

[edit]
Plot

The film opens with two people – a man (Aravind Akash) and a woman – interviewing civilians' thoughts on love and the opposite sex. After a mixture of answers, they cease their questions and the credits roll. The credits end as a boy, after being rejected by his girlfriend, commits suicide by jumping onto a passing car. Karthik (Vinay Rai) walks off disturbed to his girlfriend Jhansi's (Sadha) office. There, he is criticized by her for his antics with other women and his lack of passion for their love. She walks off, ending their relationship.
Karthik is then shown as a civil engineer in Chennai, still playful and fun-loving. Accepting a request from his manager to go on a business trip to Melbourne, he bids farewell to his friends (Raju Sundaram and Satish). On the plane, he encounters a playful, flirtatious girl, Deepika (Tanisha Mukherjee), whom he sits next to during the flight. After spending hours together, they become good friends and exchange details. However, by coincidence, Deepika is travelling to Melbourne to work in the same company as Jhansi, who is settled there. Together they seem to conveniently bump into Karthik at every corner, prompting an unwelcome reunion for Jhansi and Karthik.
While Deepika takes a liking to Karthik, Jhansi still ignores him, even though Karthik has ambitions of getting back together. At a restaurant, Karthik bumps into a fellow Tamilian(Srinath) and explains his love for Jhansi. The story then moves two years back for a flashback of events. Karthik had met Jhansi at a festival at a temple, where she played a prank on Karthik and his friends. Taking a liking to her, Karthik begins to follow Jhansi intentionally, hoping for her to fall in love with him. Soon after this happens, she becomes more and more suspicious of Karthik. This comes to a head when Karthik acts as the boyfriend of his friend's (Raju Sundaram) girlfriend, Pooja, (Paloma Rao), only for Jhansi to get confused and mistake him. His reputation as a trusting boyfriend takes another turn for the worse, when at a wedding, the bride (Lekha Washington) gives him a kiss after he improvises a song.
As the pair have a love-hate relationship, the break-up beckons when Jhansi sends her friend (Vasundra) undercover to go flirt with Karthik, however, he lies claiming he was at home ill, prompting Jhansi to end their relationship. At the end of the flashback, Srinath suggests to Karthik, that its more important to move on than think regretfully and Karthik gets over his relationship with Jhansi. However, finding out about Deepika's love towards Karthik, Jhansi becomes jealous and reinstates her love for Karthik. Soon, as she sees Deepika and Karthik's compatibility and understanding her faulty, she finally understands what went wrong in their relationship. Then, Karthik tells her through a meaningful conversation that he still loves her, not Deepika. After this, Jhansi run away to Sydney anonymously.
At the end of the film, the male interviewer who appeared at the start questions Jhansi on her decision to leave anonymously, however she refuses to answer, at first. Later, she replies that though she still loves Karthik, she was unable to understand Karthik well. She knew it would not work out and she did not want to hurt Karthik further, thus becoming the sole reason for her departure. She then confirms that she met up with Deepika recently, and had found that she is married to Karthik and has a child. She then walks away, claiming her future lies in her own hands and she is happy the way she is now.

[edit]
Cast

The cast from the film was minimal, mainly focused on the three lead actors.[5]
  • Vinay Rai as Karthik – A fun-loving young man who despite being a civil engineer, keeps his main intentions of attracting women. The child in his heart is released when he gets to know Jhansi.
  • Sadha as Jhansi – A very reserved, hypocritical and caring young woman who expects Karthik to stay loyal to her. Her dominant vivacity presents Karthik, no hope but to leave her.
  • Tanisha Mukherjee as Deepika – A bubbly, happy-go lucky young girl, who likes the antics of Karthik unlike Jhansi, prompting her to fall in love.
  • Raju Sundaram as Raju – An energetic friend to Karthik with a severe habit of ruining the situation.
  • Satish as Satish – A silent friend to Karthik who attempts to reconcile the relationship.
  • Srinath as Vaidyanathan – Meets Karthik in Melbourne and becomes an advisor to him.
  • Lekha Washington as Lekha – Plays a vital cameo as a bride who kisses Karthik, further annoying Jhansi.

[edit]
The key elements

The entire production of the film took about a year and a half to be completed and released.[6] Prior to Unnale UnnaleJeeva had directed three films, 12BUllam Ketkumae andRun, a Hindi film. Unnale Unnale became his last finished film prior to his death on the sets of his next film, Dhaam Dhoom.[7]
The film was originally announced under the title of July Kaatril (In the Winds of July)[8] with a scheduled casting of AryaSonia Agarwal and Parvati Melton.[9] However all three of the proposed lead cast opted out of the film. Agarwal cited that her marriage was on the cards and she would find it difficult to sign on for a year, whilst the other two were unable to star in the film due to undisclosed reasons.[10]
In an interview, Jeeva, said "Romance always finds a special place in Tamil films. My new film July Kaatril is also about love", confirming it was a romantic flick.[11] While Harris Jayaraj was signed on as the music director with Kavignar Vaali and Pa. Vijay assisting him with the lyrics, Jeeva's wife, Aneez, debuted as a costume designer.[12]

[edit]
Casting, location and music

The casting of Vinay Rai, after Arya opted out, as Karthik was due to some similarities with the character. Vinay made his debut into the film industry after modelling and featuring in a couple of Tulu advertisements.[13] However, they finalised the choice of the actor only after the script was ready. The choice of Sadha was more difficult and since Anniyan she had received many negative reviews and the film became important to rekindle her success.[14] The role of Deepika went to Tanisha Mukherjee, who despite being a leading heroine's sister (Kajol), she was yet to maintain a hit film. Mukherjee, came down to South India to look for new opportunities and attracted the producer into signing her on. She immediately expressed her satisfaction with the character and consented for the role.[15] The camaraderie that the lead actors shared during the filming, added on to their good performances. Raju Sundaram and Satish were picked for their dancing skills while actresses Paloma RaoLekha WashingtonAravind Akash and Vasundra all played floating cameos in the film.[16]
The film was mostly shot in Melbourne, Australia overlooking the Melbourne Docklands.[17] The climax was shot in Sydney while the beginning and the flashback was picturized in various cities across South India.[18] For the film's music and soundtrack, Jeeva renewed his previous association (12B and Ullam Ketkumae) with Harris Jayaraj. Playback singer,Chinmayi dubbed for Tanisha Mukherjee,[19]

Reception

Unnale Unnale was released worldwide alongside MayakannadiMadurai Veeran and Arputha Theevu on Tamil New Year's Day, 14 April 2007.[20] Owing to the success of the film, the number of reels grew to about hundred, it was estimated that the film garnered about INR40 crores in India. The film completed 100 days of screening in the theaters in the state ofTamil Nadu.[21] In local parlance, this is considered to be one of the measures for a film's success. The reception in Malaysia was equally successful and was released in six majormetropolises for up to 9 weeks, the film collected $114,883 (then approximately INR5 million) within its 50 day run.[22]

[edit]
Critical acclaim and controversies

Despite its relative commercial success, the film received mixed reviews on the storyline and the performances of the actors themselves. Rediff.com praised Sadha but describeTanisha Mukherjee's and Vinay Rai's performances as mediocre,[23] while the reviewers at SearchIndia.com contradict the statement, praising Tanisha and criticizing the other pair. The film made business for Vinay, who signed up many films after the project.
